Artist Statement

Much of my inspiration comes through walking in the timeless coastal landscapes of Wales, and also from the Iron Age hill forts on the border with Cheshire. I observe the eroding actions of wind and wave on rocks, breakwaters, ancient settlements and washed up beach debris. These experiences provide a rich source of subtle colours, textures and ambiguous forms, their original identities worn away- almost to abstraction.

I prefer to let these observations linger in my mind for a while, as they arrange and rearrange themselves in my memory, to be further distilled and abstracted until they emerge as paintings on canvas, original collagraph printmaking, or as an artist book. I enjoy letting the essential properties of the paint and ink play a part in this process.

My qualifications include a Masters Degree in Fine Art, and Further Education teaching certificates. I am happy to discuss commissions for paintings to compliment interior design schemes.

I have run Adult Education classes and private art and printmaking workshops and staff development activities throughout the area for over ten years, covering watercolour, acrylic, pastels, drawing, life drawing, collage, collagraph printmaking, and mixed media. The emphasis is always on encouraging each individual to develop confidence in their own creativity, whilst increasing their experience of various materials and techniques.
