Artist Statement
After gaining my degree in Art and Design I spent most of my working life in education, I led one of the most successful specialist visual arts colleges in the country and later took on the role of National Specialism Coordinator for Visual Arts and Media for SSAT. I am currently a member of the NSEAD curriculum board and work with teachers and students across the country as a Visual Arts Education Consultant. I also work for various professional organisations including AQA and the BBC.
In my own work I have explored various genres from portrait to landscape. A visit to Prague, two years ago, triggered a change of direction. I visited an exhibition in a wonderful old steel foundry. The floors and windows had the marks, like signatures, of the past industrial activity seared and gouged into them. The quality of surface and mark was stunning and I captured a visual reference on film to inform my current practice. Using a range of different media including acrylic, ink and bleach I explore how different materials react chemically to enhance surface qualities and to achieve an expressive abstraction. Through a series of paintings I have broadened my subject reference to include weathering, decay and erosion of natural and man made materials.
